Theft of Works of Art in the Algarve

Eleven works of art – paintings five and six photographs – worth about 12 thousand euros were stolen from the gallery Art Algarve, located in Lagoa’s old wine co-operative, next to the EN125. The GNR was alerted and is investigating the case.

The gallery was broken into on 13th July and to date the items have not been recovered. Apparently the thieves entered the back of the building, through the gate of the cellar. Three paintings of by Laurence Kitchen and two of José Luis Cerra-Wollstein and six photographs on aluminium, a limited series by Alexandre Manuel were stolen. The pictures by Alexandre Manuel measure 97cm x 97 cm and the other 100cm x 100 cm.

There are around 50 works of art in the museum. Most of the pieces are water related such as boats. The gallery is currently hosting “the Blue Planet” exhibition.”

The GNR have confirmed this is the first of its time to have been committed in the Algarve.
