On 20th March in the early hours of the morning, three persons entered a remote property in Sitio da Almiranta near Tavira, and threatened the occupants with a knife. The occupants were a woman aged 80 years, her husband aged 88 suffering from Alzheimers and bedridden and their son aged 52.
At the time of the break-in the occupants were asleep. During the incident the victims were tied up whilst the woman and son were assaulted. The son is reportedly at risk of losing an eye.
The property was then ransacked and the gang fled with €3000 using a vehicle driven by a fourth member.
The victims were taken to hospital. The Judicial Police attended the scene and are investigating.
