A fire has broken out at 1232 hours this afternoon is centred in the area of Tojeiro, Marmelete in Monchique at N 37º14’08’’ W 008º37’59’’.
It is reported that all of the Algarve’s fire departments have been called in to assist in fighting the blaze. Due to the location and nature of the fire, four aircraft and a helicopter are involved to assist nearly 200 firefighters including Bombeiros and GNR/GIPPS on the ground.
According to the ANPC operational report the fire has divided three and is moving in different directions fuelled by the abundance of bush and eucalyptus in the area.
Monchique Mayor Rui André described the blaze as being “out of control” and was concerned that “several homes scattered across the area would be threatened by the fire.”
A provisional operations unit has been set up at the Portimao Autofroma from where the fire-fighting is being coordinated.
It is important that those not involved in the incident stay well clear of the area to allow firefighters to do their work
