Judges releases group arrested by SEF for trafficking in women for prostitution

According to Publico (17th February), the six elements of a group that the Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF) arrested on Sunday 15th February on suspicion of trafficking in women for prostitution in Felgueiras, were all released late on Tuesday 17th February after being heard by a judge criminal investigation before the Court of Marco de Canaveses.

The alleged leader of the group, a former military of an army elite troops, will await trial subject to bi-weekly presentations in the authorities, three other defendants were subject to weekly presentations and two left in freedom only of identity and residence term, the measure less severe duress. Among them are two women who alleged they provided foreign to prostitution.

The judge, before which all defendants agreed to provide clarification, accepted so that prosecutors defended after interrogation. The prosecutor called the arrest of the leader of the group, but the judge did not find sufficient grounds to determine that coercive measure, said the PUBLIC judicial source.

The six defendants, who are also prohibited from contact with clients and women tarred with prostitution, acted from a brothel in Sandpaper in Felgueiras. Were held by the SEF on suspicion of trafficking in persons, assistance to illegal immigration, pimping and money laundering. However, after questioning the defendants were only charged with pimping (exploitation of prostitution) and gun possession, the Judge considered that there was no evidence after all of the other crimes for which they were initially detained.  

The action of the SEF, were also arrested three women for being illegally in the country that have been heard since the day before yesterday by a judge and subject to periodic presentations to the authorities.

According to the investigation, the suspects profited from prostitution receiving commissions. The establishment of nightlife was confirmed by SEF as a result of police action. Women prostituted in some apartments of a building located behind the brothel where they were guests were escorted to the facility.

During operation, the investigators identified five potential victims of trafficking in human beings, two of them just 18 years old.
