Driver who caused four deaths on A22 coach crash given suspended prison sentence

The driver, who two years ago crashed a bus on the A22 in the Algarve, with 33 Dutch tourists on board, causing four deaths, has been sentenced to a suspended prison sentence for four counts of negligent homicide.

“The court has proven that the defendant lost control of the vehicle whilst driving too close to the curb, and was inattentive and careless, especially while trying to reach and move the air diffuser,” reads a statement published on 7th April on the website of the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

The accused was sentenced to a term of one year and three months for each of the crimes which, in legal terms, correspond to a single sentence of three years and ten months imprisonment, suspended subject to probation. In addition he was banned from driving for three years.

The case investigation was conducted by the Albufeira branch of the Department of Investigation and Criminal Action (DIAP) of Faro and the prosecution was upheld by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the central criminal court of Portimão.

In addition to the four dead, the accident also resulted in 28 injuries.
