Activation of Faro District Emergency Plan of Civil Protection

Following the declaration of the state of public calamity, decreed on 17th August 2017, by the Prime Minister, under the Basic Law of Civil Protection resulting from the forest fires, the President of the District Civil Protection Commission of Faro, Dr. Jorge Botelho, convened an extraordinary meeting 1600 hrs on 18th August of the Commission ,at the Helicopter Base in Loulé, near the Loulé Fire Department.

As a result, the Faro District Civil Emergency Plan and the Municipal Civil Emergency Plans of Alcoutim, Aljezur, Castro Marim, Lagos, Loulé, Monchique, Portimão, São Brás de Alportel, Silves, Tavira and Vila do Bispo were activated automatically.

In practice the fire-fighting resources in the Algarve will be reinforced with 86 operators, 23 vehicles and two track machines until midnight on Monday. This is one of the measures that will be taken at regional level.

There will be four firefighting brigades, with 23 vehicles, which we will be pre-positioned in Barranco do Velho, Alferce, Santa Catarina da Fonte do Bispo and Bensafrim.

This is a reinforcement to what already exists, which will not be demobilized. There will be a reinforcement group for forest fires, which will be of based in Loulé, as well as an increase of five teams of the armed forces, which will join those already in municipalities that have agreements with the army.

With this measure, it is intended to have “more men available and more means placed in advance in the field, for a special vigilance in this period in which the state of preventive public calamity lasts” said Dr.Jorge Botelho. The additional resources is achieved by “removing means from a set of sites and repositioning them to aid in the prevention of forest fires”.

There are also a restriction on some activities, and the banning of “fireworks or other pyrotechnic material” is prohibited,

The state of preventive public calamity, said the mayor of Tavira, is active “in all municipalities of the Algarve, except for Lagoa, Albufeira, Faro, Olhão and VRSA”, that is, in all those that 14h00 today and 24h00 Monday will have very high risk or maximum fire, according to the assessment of the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere.

According to António Costa, the state of preventive calamity covers 155 counties nationwide and triggers «all emergency plans at the district and municipal levels of the counties concerned».
