Portimão – Judicial Police arrest person for sexual abuse of children

The Judicial Police, through the Department of Criminal Investigation of Portimão, have identified and arrested a man, for child sexual abuse.

Investigations arose from a complaint by third parties. It was found that the victims, two girls, ages 6 and 13 years old, were the target of abuses perpetrated by the person now detained over a period of five years.

The detainee, 39 years old, will be brought before the first court hearing for the application of appropriate enforcement measures.

GNR step up operations against cannabis traffickers in the Algarve

During the month of July 2015, the GNR have undertaken eight operations against those who are cultivating and trafficking in cannabis in the Algarve, resulting in the seizure of 144 plants and other items and products connected with the cultivation. The breakdown of operations and plants seized is as follows:

  • Conceicao Tavira – 31
  • Monchique – 7
  • Almancil – 6
  • Alcoutim – 6
  • Parchal – 4
  • Querenca – 19
  • Algezur – 15
  • Vila do Bispo -56

Currently the very hot weather facilitates the cultivation of cannabis.

GNR arrest person for drug trafficking in Querenca

It was reported on 24th July that the GNR Loule had arrested a 47 year old man for drug trafficking in the area of Querenca.

The man was apprehended whilst he was watering cannabis plants on land just behind his house. Other plants had already been harvested and were being dried. The GNR seized 19 plants, 11 gms of dried cannabis leaves, six dozen seeds, various ammunition and a mobile phone.

GNR Portimão seize cannabis plants – Vila do Bispo

On 27th July the Criminal Investigation Unit (NIC) of GNR Portimão attested a citizen aged 38 years for drug trafficking.

After locating the existence of a cannabis plantation at a site in Salema, Vila do Bispo municipality, the military conducted surveillance managing to identify the person responsible who was tending the plants at the time.

After arresting the person responsible for planting, the GNR seized 56 cannabis plants, which were in two separate locations, one adjacent to housing and the other in the annex to that residence, which was a “laboratory” of cannabis production.

During the operation it was found that the annex had all the elements necessary to a control the cultivation of plants, including amplifiers / current transformers, lamps with reflectors and LED lamps, a ventilation system (fan and tubes ), a spray, pH meters and controllers, as well as clocks and various fertilizer products. This allowed all year round production.

Thus, in addition to the seized plants whose dimensions ranged between 60 cm and 1.80 m in height, the operation resulted in the seizure of 1100 grams of dry leaf saltiva cannabis, among other objects that reinforce the belief that the detainee was dedicated to the cultivation of narcotic.

The person detained, is a resident in the place where the cannabis was being grown and he has appeared before the Department of Investigation and Penal Action Lagos prosecutors to apply the appropriate enforcement measures.

Lagos – Five arrested in PSP Operation against sale of counterfeit items

On 27th July in the afternoon an operation was carried out by the PSP District Command to combat the sale of counterfeit products and imitations. The operation involved 24 agents from PSP Lagos in collaboration with the Marine Police.

The area where the operation took place was in the ​​ Avenida dos Descobrimentos, Lagosd, and resulted in the seizure of 547 poles, 308 handbags, 99 watches, 83 wallets, 34 beach towels, 17 Headphones, 29 pairs of glasses and 10 mini-speakers, being counterfeit or imitation brands
duly registered in Portugal.

Some of the counterfeit brands were the subject of formal complaints which led to the arrests of 5 persons aged between 52 and 59 years of age who have been notified to appear in court.

The PSP District Command will continue to conduct specific police operations in all areas and fields in which it holds legal authorization.

Silves – Man found dead in a burned out car

On 24th July at around 1730 hrs, fire watchers who were part of a team engaged in spotting forest fires, noticed smoke rising from an area just to the south of Barragem do Funcho in the Silves Municipality.

As they approached they found that a car, an Audi 80,  was on fire which had spread to surrounding vegetation.  Once the fire had been extinguished it was  discovered that there was a person was inside who was certified dead. The cause of the fire could not be immediately determined.

The fire is being treated as suspicious and is being investigated by the Judicial Police.

Albufeira – Tourists break into Garrafeira resulting in disorder.

On 25th July in the arly hours of ther morning an Irish tourist who was reportedly drunk, banged his head against the glass front of a Garrafeira in Albuferia and through the broken glass entered the premise. He attempted to steal two bottles of wine but was stopped when he attempted to flee by a GNR patrol. He was cut by the glass and was attended to by INEM before being taken to hospital.

Subsequently a number of other tourists reportedly Dutch and Spanish tried to break into the store whereupon the GNR patrol called for reinforcements to contain the disorder. A total of 25 GNR officers from Albufeira and the Intervention Unit attended the scene. a second person was arrested and the details of 5 others were recorded by the GNR.

Tavira – Couple arrested for assaulting PSP agents

On 25th July, a foreign couple, a man aged 32 years and a woman aged 25 years were arrested for assaulting PSP agents.

At around 0120 hrs the two had entered and locked themselves in a male toilet in a snack bar in Tavira. The snack bar owner  telephoned the PSP, who when they arrived, approached the couple and were assaulted. The couple were arrested.

Quarteria – Tourist arrested after assaulting girlfriend

A tourist aged 23 years, staying in the Lisbon area, was detained at 0800 hrs on 25th July at 0800 hrs by the GNR in Quarteira after assaulting his girlfriend.

The incident took place in an apartment off a main road in the town. When the GNR arrived, the individual continued to attack the victim as well as assaulting the GNR officers. He was immediately arrested

Lagoa – GNR detain person subject of International Arrest Warrant

On 16th July in the morning the GNR Lagoa arrested a foreign citizen aged 48 years who was the subject of an international arrest warrant issued by the authorities in his country.

Whilst on patrol in Parchal, Lagoa the GNR was alerted to an attempted theft inside a shopping centre. Upon arrival, the patrol found that a foreigner had consumed food at a cafe and made of without payment.

The GNR apprehended the suspect and from checking various data bases including the Schengen platform established that he was the subject of an international arrest warrant for arrest and extradition. The warrant was active since the end of March, involving the subject’s involvement in crimes against property and drug trafficking.

The individual has appeared before Évora Court of Appeal.
