Public Safety Role and Contacts
Safe Communities Algarve’s crime prevention role includes that of fire prevention insofar that the setting fire to property and land constitutes an offence under Portuguese law. Such action whether deliberate or through negligence can result in a major disaster with possible loss of life, injury and destruction of infrastructure, land and property.
The role of Safe Communities Algarve in such circumstances is to support the role of the authorities such as the Civil Protection Agency, Bombeiros, GNR and PSP, in helping with others to disseminate information to the foreign community as well as assisting in soliciting donations in terms of resources when required to help those in the front line dealing with the incidents.
The purpose of this page is twofold: firstly to provide an avenue of communication with the emergency authorities in particular the Bombeiros and secondly when such disasters arise to seek assistance from the community in disseminating requests from the authorities for donations or the passing of other information concerning public safety.

Tavira Fire Now Declared Under Control
The fire in the Tavira region of the Algarve that has been raging since Wednesday afternoon (July 18) is now being declared as being “under control”. At 6pm yesterday (July 21) the second commander of the civil protection agency running the operation to tackle the fire, José Cideço, told media that the fire was now under control, although none of the forces on the ground would be removed yet.
There are still more than 1,000 operatives fighting the fire across Tavira and the São Brás de Alportel areas, being supported by 189 vehicles and 13 operational aircraft. Small pockets of fire continue to need special attention in the area including some in the north of São Brás and others around Cachopo in Tavira. There are still active fronts within the perimeter of the fire zone (which extends across 75 kilometres) but these are being carefully monitored and addressed by firefighters.
The area still remains on high alert, however it appears that the worst of the fire, which saw the largest firefighting operation in the history of Portugal and consumed more than a third of the total area of Tavira, is now under the control of the Bombeiros firefighters.
